NOMINATE a Boston area Black Business for a Spotlight Award

"I like people" says Sandy Middlebrooks, owner and principle photographer of Middlebrooks Associates Photography in Boston. "Photography allows me to be involved in recording living history. As black people, we don't do nearly enough of this."

Originally from Ohio, Sandy's interest in photography began in High School and continued into college at Fisk University. Eventually it became a full time venture about 16 years ago.

Today, Middlebrooks has photographed close to 600 weddings, and a multitude of events for businesses, schools, and politicians. "I've been fortunate to be able to meet a variety of interesting people," adds Sandy. In addition to weddings, Middlebrooks also does family photography, specifically individuals and children. "Interestingly, many of the weddings I've photographed have now become families, so I've literally followed many of my customers lives through the years."

Upon walking in Sandy's studio office in Boston, one would think they've entered the office of a computer consultant. "Like everything else in life, the computer has become an important tool to the photographer as well," explains Sandy. "Investing in technology for me is critical. It changes the way I do business and the way in which I interact with my customers." Today, instead of showing customers "proofs", pictures can be uploaded to a website for customers to view and make their selections. Middlebrooks stays abreast of the latest technologies in the photographic world by regular attendance at national trade shows and participation in local, regional, and national photography associations.

"The digitization of photography has changed things dramatically. Just take a look at the proliferation of digital cameras on the market today" says Sandy. But be careful when purchasing digital cameras he cautions. "The technology changes so rapidly, that the model you buy today, will be obsolete tomorrow. Be sure you understand specifically what your needs are before purchasing."

When asked what makes Middlebrooks Associates stand out among the competition, Sandy explains "I've always had a basic desire to do things right. Follow through is important, as well as developing a special relationship with your customers. It takes a special person to deal with the multitude of personalities encountered in this profession. Over 80% of my business comes from referrals, which points to the relationships I've been fortunate to foster in the community."
