A true "family business" in every sense of the word, Tartt's Day Care center is Boston's oldest private minority-owned day care center. Located in Roxbury, the Center was founded in 1946 by Bessie Tartt Wilson and has been continuously owned and operated as a family business at the same location for 55 years. Ms. Wilson who was born in Mobile, Alabama, came to Boston at the age of nineteen to study Nursing. At the completion of her studies, she practiced nursing in Boston area hospitals and as a private nurse. While in her early 20's, she started a day care and foster care facility at 2 Holborn Terrace in Roxbury to serve the rapidly changing needs of the area. Today, the 2 Holborn Terrace facility has developed into a day care center and kindergarten, and continues to provide excellence in childcare. In 1999, a second center was opened at 1010A Massachusetts Avenue in Roxbury, expanding the program to include care day care services for infants and toddlers. Later this year, a third facility will open for toddlers at the Roxbury Crossing T Station. These facilities are a living tribute to the hard work, strength, and loving spirit of Ms. Wilson who passed away in 1994. She will be remembered for her strong advocacy for healthy children, and for her dedication to providing the very best care to children who attended the center. Co-owners Mary Reed
and Alan Davis (the son and daughter of Ms. Wilson), are continuing
the legacy of excellence left behind by Ms. Wilson. Earlier this year,
the business was awarded the Long Term Community Business Award by the
Black and White Boston. "Today's challenges in running and operating
a day care center and school are far different from those experienced
by my mother" says Ms. Reed. "Families are in transition and
children require a multitude of services. Today's center based child
care has to be prepared to meet these challenges at every level." Regardless of the challenges, Tartts is dedicated to caring for and nurturing the total child. "Our programming emphasis is on helping very young children develop the social, physical and academic skills they will need to succeed in school. Most children attend Tartt's for a full three years and then graduate to attend first grade. This continuity of care provides a very stable, safe, and supportive environment where children are encouraged to indulge their natural curiosity about the world around them" explains Ms. Reed. In addition to Ms. Reed and Mr. Davis, other family members involved in the operation of the business include Ms. Reed's daughters Mary B. Reed, Anita Handy, Wanda Pina, Maryum Reed, and most recently granddaughter, Nida Wright. Ms. Reed's son Ken, is Tartt's Comptroller. When asked about
the advantages of working as a family, Ms. Reed offered, "it encourages
support for one another, and is the source of many creative ideas." Tartt's Day Care is also on the web at www.tartts.com
